Victor Ogunyinka

Read Profile

In one of my last days as an undergraduate of microbiology at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo in 2011, a coursemate asked what next after school.

I was unequivocal about it, “journalism,” I answered.

Since 2014 when I took my first job at the African Newspapers of Nigeria; publishers of the Tribune titles (the oldest, relevant media organisation in Nigeria), I never looked back.

Nine years after that first exciting encounter, I became the Managing Editor, Online at the Nigerian Tribune.

As Managing Editor, I oversee the operations of the online department both administrative and editorial.

Tribune Online has a range of services from breaking news, and fact checks, to current affairs, reports on politics, and business, and a dedicated website for sports, and analysis, among others.

We are one of the few media organisations in Nigeria that has a running podcast segment.

I wasn’t at Tribune for nine years.

Before my appointment as Managing Editor in December 2022, I was the pioneer Senior Managing Editor at The Quest Times (www.thequesttimes.com). I resigned from my appointment in November 2022.

Before Quest Times, I was the Online Editor of Vanguard newspapers, one of the leading online media in Nigeria from January 2019 to January 2022.

At Vanguard, I was the pioneer Anchor of the organisation’s online television, popularly known as VanguardLive, which launched on February 14, 2019, with the live coverage of the overnight announcement of the presidential election postponement.

It gathered about a million views on Facebook alone in 48 hours.

Victor’s journalism career started in April 2014 as Senior Health Reporter at the Nigerian Tribune before moving to the online department as Online News Editor and Social Media Manager in the same organisation.

I have attended quite a number of courses and training in digital media and have continued to grow in ensuring that journalism as a tool of redemption is handy in the crusade to have a better society.

And now, MTN-MIP 2 programme uniquely stands out among the many opportunities I have had, rightly so as it brings a renewal of the mind and a depth in knowledge of what it every journalist must know as they progress on the job.

For me, journalism is the heartbeat and livewire of society; it is the thin line that gives a solution to a problem or escalates it.

My personal interests are critical thinking, sports, music, and solving problems.
